Safety alert on Manasmithra pills – TGA

The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA), in conjunction with state health authorities, is investigating a report of the presence of dangerous levels of lead and other heavy metals in the Ayurvedic medicine Manasamitram Pills.

If high levels of lead are present in these products, taking them could result in lead poisoning. Lead poisoning is a serious condition that can cause long-term health effects up to and including organ damage and death. Pregnant women and children are at a greater level of risk of lead poisoning.

TGA is advising consumers who has Manasmithra Vatika (Manasamitram Pills), to not use them. If they have already taken some of these pills, they should seek medical advice from doctor or call the Poisons Information Centre.

Manasamitram Pills: It is used in Ayurvedic treatment of depression and psychosis. It is used in children to improve brain functions, memory and concentration, in diseases like autism. It is used to treat epilepsy, seizures and mania. It is also used in poison treatment.
