Self medication can lead to Drug poisonings from chloroquine (potential Corona Virus treatment)

AVOID SELF MEDICATION

Currently social media groups spreading information regarding the dosage for Corona Virus treatment in the US (Hydroxy Chloroquine + Azithromycin) and stating to have this treatment at home.

The World Health Organization recommended that people suffering from COVID-19-like symptoms should avoid self-medicating. As Hydroxychloroquine is prescription only medication (POM) and dose for treatment is not standard for all patients and it needs medical evaluation. The drug has a variety of side effects and can in rare cases harm the heart. Since people with heart conditions are at higher risk of severe COVID-19 they should avoid taking Hydroxychloroquine.

A total of 329 drugs are known to interact with hydroxychloroquine and patients with certain underlying conditions must not use this medication.

As per reports, Nigeria on Sunday warned about cases of chloroquine poisoning after the anti-Malaria drug was hailed as a possible cure for coronavirus. Health officials in the West Afrian nation confirmed on Sunday that two people were hospitalized in Lagos for overdoses of the anti-Malaria drug. Nigeria’s Center for Disease Control cautioned citizens from self-medicating with the drug, which is still undergoing testing for safety and effectiveness.

What is Self medication: The use of medications without prior medical consultation regarding indication, dosage, and duration of treatment is referred to as self-medication.

Self medication include risks such as incorrect self-diagnosis, delays in seeking medical advice when needed, infrequent but severe adverse reactions, dangerous drug interactions, incorrect manner of administration, incorrect dosage, incorrect choice of therapy, masking of a severe disease and risk of dependence and abuse.
